Surveillance Case Study: Toronto Port Authority

The Toronto Port Authority (TPA) operates one of the largest commercial ports in Canada and is responsible for overseeing shipping, navigation, transportation of passengers and goods and handling and storage of cargo. The terrorist attacks in the U.S. on September 11, 2001, forced TPA to reassess its practices. Port officials decided one way to improve security was to install new surveillance cameras capable of capturing suspicious activity and alerting security personnel.

A new IBM Cluster 1350 supercomputer was recently purchased by the Ontario Cancer Institute (OCI) and launched at the University Health Network (UHN) in Toronto to help accelerate progress in cancer research. The project also involves the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute in Buffalo, N.Y.
