U of T installs LED-based street lights |
Photo courtesy Osram Sylvania The University of Toronto (U of T) is saving energy and reducing maintenance costs by lining the streets and promenades of its main campus with 100 new lanterns that use light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for ambient illumination. The university is using post top fixture LED retrofit kits from lighting manufacturer Osram Sylvania, which enabled the energy-efficient conversion without needing to change existing street light fixtures. "The LED units fit securely into our fixtures with no need for additional external modifications," says Blair Mochrie, U of T's trade services manager. "The kits allowed us to maintain good-looking white light, while greatly reducing the system wattage over existing high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps." The retrofit project involved 100 mercury-free lamps featuring ornamental crowns. |
