The township of Woolwich, Ont., has linked its municipal offices with a recently opened memorial centre using high-speed optical fibre networking technology.

Xenium IT worked with the township's project planning and management team to integrate the new multipurpose complex with Woolwich's existing voice and data system. They chose to use fibre technology from Atria Networks.

"The speed and quality of the network connection between the two locations effectively form one 'virtual building' for voice and data communications, despite their physical separation," says Brian Detzler, the township's facilities manager (pictured, right, with Xenium president Frank Kuschmierz, left). "The Woolwich Memorial Centre is open seven days a week, from 6:30 a.m. to midnight, for operations and public access, so we needed reliable network service."

The project was successfully completed within tight deadlines.

"The technical decisions were made in the late spring and early summer of 2009, which meant the implementation had to be pushed as fast as possible," says Barry Gerth, a technical specialist for Xenium. "The virtual local area network (VLAN) configuration was based on specific hardware to manage traffic. Since the centre's opening, there's been no downtime."

Case Study: Nova Scotia Department of Health

In recent years, the Nova Scotia Department of Health (DoH) has identified a need to invest more in technology. In 2009, for example, a province-wide 'telecare' system was introduced to help support primary health care, improve the public's access to education and services and help patients cope with non-urgent problems.
