New Brunswick puts more on the map

Service New Brunswick (SNB) has launched the GeoNB Map Viewer, a new online source of geographic information for the province.

Using geographic information system (GIS) technology from Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) Canada, the web-based tool allows the public to access maps and aerial photos of New Brunswick for free. SNB, a provincially owned corporation, developed a spatial data infrastructure (SDI) to help centrally manage the province's property registries, land assessments, survey control network, topographic maps and other geographically related resources.

"This application has helped us significantly reduce data duplication and inaccuracies to better meet the needs of provincial departments and the public," says Bernie Connors, SDI manager for SNB.

GeoNB Map Viewer represents gigabytes of data that previously was not easily accessible to the public. Its high-resolution aerial photography covers the entire province, for example, whereas other free mapping tools only cover about 10 per cent at that quality.

Case Study: Nova Scotia Department of Health

In recent years, the Nova Scotia Department of Health (DoH) has identified a need to invest more in technology. In 2009, for example, a province-wide 'telecare' system was introduced to help support primary health care, improve the public's access to education and services and help patients cope with non-urgent problems.
