SQ honoured for web mapping

Sûreté du Quebec (SQ), the only police organization with jurisdiction over all of the province, has won an Award of Excellence for developing web mapping services to support police and public-safety operations.

"The SQ geomatics division has significantly improved its services using geographic information system (GIS) technology to help police and civil servants," said James Wickson, vice-president (VP) of Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) Canada, which presented the award at a Montreal regional user conference last month.

The geomatics division provides mapping services to 7,180 employees of the organization.

"GIS technology has become the backbone of our team's operations," said Frédérick Pons, SQ's geomatics division head. "We have increased the speed, quality and efficiency of mapping. This has raised our profile within the organization as an important support service, enabling police and civil servants to act timely and effectively on public-safety concerns."
