CNE receives grant to preserve Canadian history

The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) Archives in Toronto were recently named one of the recipients of EMC Canada's Heritage Trust Grant—a cash and equipment donation valued at $15,000.

The grant will assist the CNE Archives, which have been preserving written documents and photographs since 1964, in digitizing their historically valuable film collection, some of which dates back to the 1920s. Given the CNE's popularity and age, these archived records chronicle the changing face of Canada over the past 130 years.

The Heritage Trust awards are presented to organizations working on projects designed to protect and improve access to information. The grant includes two, 4-TB network-attached storage (NAS) rack-mount servers and funds to cover the purchase of additional equipment, including a film scanning system and freezers for the archived films.

The EMC Information Heritage Initiative was launched in 2007 to help make important historical documents and cultural artifacts readily accessible via the Internet for research and educational purposes. EMC Canada, headquartered in Toronto, develops and provides information infrastructure technology to support private- and public-sector organizations.
